THE MIRACLE OF LIFE

FIVE WAYS ACUPUNCTURE CAN BOOST FERTILITY IN WOMEN

Researchers for New York’s Weill Cornell Medical Center reviewed existing studies and have found that acupuncture, the traditional Chinese medicine technique which uses sterilized hair thin needles to treat arthritis, weight control, PMS, morning sickness, endometriosis and dysmenorrhea, is also showing promise as a treatment for female infertility. They have found that acupuncture can help:

1. Reduce stress hormones that may interfere with ovulation.
2. Normalize hormones that regulate ovulation so an egg can be released.
3. Increase blood flow to the uterus, thereby improving the chances of a fertilized egg implanting.
4. Improve ovulation cycles in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which makes getting pregnant difficult.
5. Improve pregnancy rates in women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF).

ACUPUNTURE MAY IMPROVE SPERM FOR MEN AND EASE MALE INFERTILITY

An estimated 10% of men are infertile. The male partner is responsible for up to 50% of infertility among the couples. Men’s exposure to some compounds, such as phthalates, common in cosmetics, deodorants, and many plastics are associated with sperm abnormalities, as article published in Epidemiology, 14, p 261-262, May 2003 suggested.

Previous studies of acupuncture on male infertility have suggested that acupuncture can improve sperm productivity and motility (a measure of sperm movement). This study was published in Journal of Fertility and Sterility, Vol. 84, No. 1, pp 141-147, July 2005. Researchers analyzed sperm samples at the beginning and end of the study and found significant improvement in sperm quality and quantity in the acupuncture group compared with a control groups without acupuncture treatment.
